Need more explanation on previous posting

Hi --

I'm still a victim of the lost desktop syndrome. Would like to try the
following instruction that were posted but I don't know how. The
instructions said:

Go to this web site:

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Download and run the registry edit on line 285, right hand side,
"Restore all display tabs".

Once you've got the Desktop tab restored, click on the "Customize
Desktop" button. Click on the Web tab. Delete any entries other
than "My Current Home Page".

When I click on what is supposed to be a file at line 285, I get
several many lines of text. What am I supposed to do with that? Is it
to be saved as a some type of file, then double-clicked ... or is this
stuff that I'm supposed to re-type somewhere, or what?

Thanks.

You probably get text as you have a non-standard association for .reg
files. Save it using right-click and "Save Target as..", then
right-click the saved file and select Merge.

Workaround:
Try a right click on the link and use Save Target. That should give you the
saved file that you need. Double click the saved file to run the script.

Thanks, Folks. I was able to run it but the same problem persists.

(No desktop icons, no taskbar, no start button, no Windows Explorer
(re-creating & renaming didn't help), no Internet Explorer., no Control
Panel) If I hadn't had Firefox already installed, I wouldn't be able
to access anything.

Have run every type of anti-virus, anti-spyware and anti-adware program
that anyone has suggested, and have done an in-place reinstall of XP
SP1 ... all to no avail. Am still stuck with working through the Task
Manager.

Very discouraging.

Don't know your history of problems, but what you describe can be
fix'd by opening a RUN command (WinKey+R) EXPLORER <enter>
should get your desktop back.

I sure wish it could, but no joy. I can see something flash for a
millisecond then disappear.

Thanks anyway.

If you are still unable to run explorer.exe, then your computer is not
clean and/or damaged by viruses/malware. The fix that Kelly has is for
when the ability to change Desktop settings has been damaged, not to
repair explorer.exe.

You say you've run lots of av's, but with no details it's hard to know
what else to suggest without seeing the computer. You might want to
have a professional take a look.

Or consider backing up your data and doing a clean install.

If you're not ready for either of those solutions, run HijackThis and
post your log to one of these forums (not here, please):
