Need help with Vista or HP computer

P

I just purchased a new HP computer, so I'm trying to adjust to windows vista
home premium. Everything was going ok until yesterday. My hard drive came
pre-partitioned (C,D, and E). Hard drive E was the drive I wanted to use for
storage of my personal files. Anyway when I turned on the computer yesterday
hard drive E's icon was different ( default icon of windows I guess). My
drive works fine, but the icon is driving me crazy. Is there anything I can
due to regain the hard drive icon and not what I now have. I'm not sure if
this is a windows vista problem or an HP computer problem.
Thanx

Does the next message from Nick help?

I haven't tried on a fixed disk but you can change the icon using a
oeminfo.ini file.

Is your icon as same as what I've attached to this post? If yes, then the
difference in the two drives is that one has Vista installed, while the
other simply doesn't. Both icons represent a hard disc, with the above
mentioned difference. I don't know of any "simple" solution for changing
drive icons, but try reading this post:

Subject: [How can I change a drive icon in Explorer]
So I have a little time on my hands over the Xmas holiday.)

I decided that I needed to change the icon that explorer uses for my
external disk drive.

My old XP PC used to display it correctly using an icon that came on the
driver CD

I did the REGEDIT thing;

I created the following key and pointed it at the 3dhdd.ico file

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\DriveIcons\C\DefaultIcon]

It didn't work! I had a look at some other icon files in Vista and they
were
different so I used IcoFX to create a Vista compatible icon file
containing
four images, a 256x256 True colour, 48x48, 32x32 and 16x16 this was saved
as
a new file extDrive.ico

Now when I click on computer in explorer I see the new icon complete with
the bar showing used and free space.

My problem is that the small icon in the navigation panel on the left
where
all the drives are listed is displayed as an empty white square rather
than
the small icon I'm expecting to see. The details pane at the bottom of
explorer also shows the correct icon, and very pretty it is too.

Have I missed something?

Have I done something wrong?

I'm 95% there. Can anyone help me sort this out please?

Happy New Year.

Good Luck! And I wish you a Happy New Year!

I have the same deal - XP on C, Vista on D, different icons - just as Emil
posted.
Now my obsessive/compulsive/neurotic side has something to focus on -
THANKS!

I figure I need to find the file/icon that represents D and replace it with
the one that
represents C - this should be fun.

OH LOOK - a chicken...............................

Happy New Year all.
