startup of xp starts with 32 bit color then the screen goes black and the
color changes to 8 bit when the desk top is displayed again -- very strange

Reset back to 32 bit and continue okay until next restart

thank you Michael

I have a Dell Demension 8400 Windows XP media Center Edition 2005, and the
only graphics card I have is the built in one. I don't have a separate disk
for graphics. so do I have to run the operating system disk.

Onboard graphics cards, those built-in are often supplied by various name
manufacturer's. Nonetheless, I would check the Dell website for updated XP
compatible drivers for your graphics card. If that fails to resolve it or
no such drivers are available. I would contact Dell tech support about the
issue you are having, you might also tell them it was recommended you might
try reinstalling the drivers for your card and ask them how to proceed.
