Need Help with Sidewinder

Hey all, I recently bought I Microsoft Sidewinder GamePad from
Goodwill, since I can't really afford any of the $100 ones they sell at
stores such as Best Buy =( Well, the thing is that I found out that it
is made for the Windows 95/98 Operating Systems, and I have a Windows
XP and am about to buy a Windows XP Pro notebook for college. Is there
any way that I can make the gamepad fully function on a Windows XP OS?
It is a Plug & Play; no software is needed for it. I attempted to
install the Sidewinder3.0 driver, but I recieved an error message:

"Error creating process
<C:\DOCUME~`\9\LOCALS~1\Temp\******.TMP\******.EXE>. Reason: The system
cannot find the path specified."

I starred out some things because I don't know if they have anything to
do with security. =)

So, is there anything I can do to savor $3?

Thanks in advance!

Cari \(MS-MVP\)

The software won't run but drivers are included in XP. Connect it, go to
the Control Panel and click on Game Controllers, use the drop down list and
select your pad.

If it's like my old Sidewinder 3D Pro joystick, the best (and only) drivers
you'll get for it are the ones built in to XP. Just plug it in, and see if
it's detected under the Game Controllers control panel. If not, see if you
can add it. (Microsoft Sidewinder, autodetect, if memory serves.)

The XP drivers don't permit the use of profiles, but otherwise the gamepad
will be fully functional. As you've discovered, the software for Win9X can't
be installed under XP.

If you want something more elaborate, either buy a USB controller, or wait
for the current USB devices to trickle down to Goodwill. (By that time,
maybe they'll have limited support under Vista.)

Address scrambled. Replace nkbob with bobkn.

Hmm, it doesn't seem to work at all. It says that the gamepad is
connected and detected, but nothing works. Is it because I need a
certain game to make it work, or that it is so old?

Thanks again!

You do not need a certain game; the Sidewinder is broken. You do not need to
spend $100 on a gamepad. I see them for sale for $10-30.

No, WinXP doesn't support such devices natively, and Microsoft never
produced WinXP drivers for them.
