Hello,
I am needing help setting up a connection from the office to my bosses home
computer. The host and client both run XP Pro. He wants to connect from the
office, where our server is running 2003 SBS R2 and we have a firewall. On
his end, he uses a Linksys access point and is wireless. I am not very
experienced with networking and do not understand the flow of IP addresses in
this configuration. Can someone help me with issue. I have to ask you to
explain the hows and whys if you would.
Thank you

one more thing I need to know. Am I connectting to the IP of the ISP or the
router or the computer?

Use the public IP of the router, ie. as assigned by his ISP. You can get that
by going to http://www.whatismyip.com from the computer at his house. A
better solution is to use a free dynamic naming service like No-IP.com or
DynDNS to map a fully qualified domain name [FQDN] to the IP.

The way it works is you run a small program on his computer that contacts
the No-IP.com or DynDNS servers on a time scheduled basis. The FQDN is then
mapped to the current IP address and that information if propagated over the
internet. You then call his PC using the FQDN, ie. hisFQDN.no-ip.com for
example.
