I have XP and windows Media Player 10 running. Suddenly today any mpegs I
download no longer are playable! Before today everything was fine but now, I
can't view any WMA files. I've uplaoded all the lastest updates and and all,
and still nothing. Can somebody please off advice? Even my saved files that
were in mpeg format no loner play, it comes saying "file extension not
available"???

Hi

Try a System Restore back to a point before the problem started.

How aren't they playable?
- you can't double click on the file name?
- you can't use the File -> Open option?
- the files open but no image and/or sound?

You need to be more specific!

It won't allow me to play the file. the message staes:

"windows media player cannot play the file. if the filwe is on another
computer, verify that you are connected to the network. if you typed in a
path, verify that it is correct".

First up the the file is on the actual computer! Also have a copy on disc.
And I'm connected to the network anyway. The path is correct. I checked it.

Still nothing...

Try a good old disk check and then a system defrag. Also check to make
sure that any other media players you have installed haven't grabbed
the rights to play the files. 99% of the time that works like a
charm...

- "windows media player cannot play the file. if the filwe is on another
computer, verify that you are connected to the network. if you typed in a
path, verify that it is correct".

This error message is most likely caused when there is a file system change
like renaming a folder, file, drive letter etc. and you try to play a file
from the Windows Media Player (WMP) Library or Playlist which saves loaded
files to its own directory.

If this is the case then ther are two options:

one:
right click the erroneuos file inside WMP and click error details, this
should bring up a dialog box allowing you to manually find the file.

Two
find the original files and open them by double clicking or from the right
click context menu. You can also turn on 'monitor folders' which notes
changes within the selected folders to prevent his from happening again
(unless you delete them). To do this select 'tools' from options menu >
Library (tab)> moniter folders and add any folders you want WMP to moniter.

Hope this helped.

Yup, sounds like you created a playlist and then moved the files to a
different folder or directory...
