Need help with .MSG Files

B

Brian

I backed up all my old emails onto a DVD before I upgraded to Vista. Since I
was using MS Outlook as my email program, it saved all the messages as .msg
files. How can I convert them back to files read by Windows Mail (the
default email client in Vista) and get them back into the email program
itself?

I have a couple ideas, but I have no way to verify them:

1. Right click one and choose Open with and select WinMail (Windows Mail).

2. Change the extension to .EML

How do I change the extension? I can rename it as an .eml file but it still
shows it as a .msg file type.

I seriously doubt that will work due to the extreme difference between .EML
and .MSG formats. I don't know if WM will directly import from Outlook or
not, however, if it does, it will need the entire Outlook .PST file, not the
individual .MSG files. I would also suspect that an Outlook to WM transfer
will require Outlook to be installed on the Vista machine. Note that if the
machine had Outlook installed before the Vista upgrade, it should operate
just as before.

Won't work. A msg file has a completely proprietary to Office format and
WinMail and OE can't read it.

I found a program called "ABC Amber Outlook Converter" version 7.02. It
seems to do the trick, even preserving the attachments. :) Hope this helps
others too!
