Need help in home networking

Not sure this is the correct ng. If I should be somewhere else with these
questions perhaps some one will refer me on.

I have read enough to believe that home networking can be very difficult,
however I thought I knew enough about the pc and windows os to be able to do
it. I confess - I am really frustrated. Even after two of those ... for
Dummies books I still am in the dark.

In a nut shell:
added a new laptop with Win XP Home Ed. and a wireless adaptor to my
older Dell desktop running Win 98 SE with a NIC adaptor installed
have a broadband internet connection (Road Runner)
bought a Linksys wireless B broadband router

both pcs can now access the internet simultaneously - no problem

I would like to share the printer which is connected to the desktop pc and,
I guess, I'd like to share some files between the two pcs. I believe that
this should be entirely possible. I have visited a lot of configuration
places in both pcs and can not get these two machines to "see" each other.
I feel that I am probably doing something wrong which is small but very
fundamental.

As I said I am frustrated and stumped and may not even be asking the
question to the correct ng but if someone can advise me, even a little, I
would be eternally grateful.
