I was upgrading the OS on my PC and having my friend do
it. And apparently he messed something up. I was running
on Windows 98 SE and was upgrading to XP, which he
successfully did. But since my 60 gig hard drive was
partitioned into 3 smaller 20 gig hard drives(my old
motherboard couldn't handle the full 60 gig drive) all the
he needed to do was reformat C: and install. I've
reformatted my C: before and it left the other 2
partitioned drives alone.
But something happened and I no longer have the other 2
partitioned drives on my computer. It says that my C: is
now 31 gigs and I have 25 gigs unallocated. Apparently the
data is still there, it wasn't erased, but the partitions
are no longer be recognized, and because of this the
drives have been reassigned. We can't figure out how to
access or recover the data on the 2 partitioned sections
of the drive without deleting it.
My friend says we can partition it again, and I will have
a 60 gig hard drive again, but it will delete the 25 gigs
of data that we can't get to. He then suggested a program
called Partition Magic, but he says that there is only a
small possibility that the data will be recovered. I told
him to take XP off and reinstall 98, since all the times I
had reformatted the C: before my other 2 partitions were
left alone, I figured that it would restore it and there
would be 3 partitions again, but he said that it would be
the same, that it still wouldn't recognize the partitions.
And it would still say its a 31 gig drive.
If I had known this would happen(apparently my friend
didn't realize this would happen) I would have backed up
everything instead before this happened. But since the 2
partitions have never been affected I didn't think it
would be affected this time. What should I do? I don't
want to lose that data, some of it I can't replace and
some of it I could care less about. But how can I fix
this? I'd appreciate any help that anyone could give.
