hi
i just bought a old computer with windows 98 on and also have the product
key for it and disc.
i dont intend to make the computer go online as it will be only a backup for
all my work and free my main computer, but i would love to be able to put on
windows xp onto my windows 98 comp as i like how windows xp runs and looks.
i have a cd with windows xp and also my own windows xp product key which i
purchased for my main computer.
what i'd like to know is can i use my main product key when i install
windows xp onto the old windows 98 and if so would ther be any problems or
things i should do before hand.
Many thank you's in advance and i hope i have made clear my question :)

You want to have a single copy of Windows XP on two computers? No, you
may not do that. You have a license to use it on a single computer.

Moreover, your old Windows 98 computer's hardware is almost certainly
way too underpowered to run Windows XP.

Big question with many in & outs, not sure if you mean dual boot or
single install, here are a few links, one for Home & one for Pro
install, use google to help you understand further, just a matter of
finding links that suit your skill level.

If your WinXP CD is a Retail Version and did not come with your
computer then definetly you can install it on the older computer. I forget
if you can have the same WinXP and
Product key on more than one machine at the same time unless you
have a corporate version. Let MVP weigh in on that.

fundementally speaking
you are contemplating
piracy.

------------------

if the xp was activated
on a different computer,
it won't be allowed to
activate again on a
different computer.

there is more fyi on
microsoft.com regarding
what is "hardware hash"
and "activations".

the alternative might be to
buy another license or perhaps
another xp on the cheap.

----------------

perhaps, if you no longer
have a real need for w98,
you might install linux or
something on it, as a
project

or as you indicated a need
for a storage locations for
backups,

you may want to dedicate
that disk for backups by,

taking that drive, formatting
it and install it as a slave or
external drive to your
xp machine.

----------

another project you can
do is to install virtual pc
on your winxp then

install win98 in virtual
pc, since you have that
setup cd.

oh my, even though i own and perched both windows 98 cd and product key and
windows xp cd and product key (which cost a bit, might i add) and that the
old (windows 98) will never go online and i paid for both comp's it would
still be classed as piracy...................
if thats the case then i'll have to stick with basic windows 98 on the old
computer, shame cos windows xp is nice but oh well never mind thanks to all
for your advice.

As previously said if your old PC has '98 on it it probably won't run
XP at all...or at all well...

Also if you are not going to go online with it it may be difficult to
install the drivers for the hardware in, or attached to your PC
because it's likely any driver CDs (or floppies!) you had when you got
the PC ('98 era) won't work with XP.

If you want to stay within the law then on XP Disk will only do 1 PC
at a time.

well, actually having two
xp's on the same pc
but on separate disks
is not out of the question.

one serves as a primary
operating system for one's
pleasure or business

and the other to serve as
an emergency backup
and method to work on
the primary, if it crashes.

ok thanks, i only paid ten pound for the old windows 98 comp an it seems
that it wouldn't be able to cope to well with a windows xp on it be what
others have said, i'll just use it for project backups just not with windows
xp on.

I hadn't thought of that but I'm glad you said it because it's what I
infact have on mine!...

I run a laptop that came with Windows 98 but now is running Windows XP. Over
the years a I upgraded the hardware.
I replaced the 4 GB hard drive with a 40 GB one.
I tripled the ram so it now has 192 MB, and it only cost one fifth the
original cost to add a 128 MB module.
I flashed the bios to a windows 2000 compatible version when Sony made that
available and still supported the hardware. That bios update disabled any
functionality of hardware buttons that worked for windows 98 tasks, like
starting the email application.

One hinge broke a few years ago, then the last remaining hinge broke last
year, so it isn't as portable as it once was.
The battery died a long time ago, but I bought a external universal battery.
It has wireless b/g via a plug in card, and usb 2 via a plug in card.

The ram upgrade I did was what made it a useable machine. 64 MB was far too
little ram, and adding 128 MB turned it into a dream machine by comparison.

Windows XP is the last upgrade I can do because Vista and Win 7 have too
high of a minimum requirements.
My main machine is a i7, but I use the old laptop a lot for reading ebooks,
mail, web browsing, OneNote, remote access to other machines.

You may find that it works reasonably as a Linux system.

hi :)
wow you done well with your laptop :) i only wanted to see if i could put
my windows xp on windows 98 as the windows xp looks so much better and is
easy to work around and on.
i think with what others have said what i have on 98 will have to do for now
as just a basic 98 which is
Genuine intel, pentium (r) II processor intel mmx(tm) technology, 64 mb ram
not sure how much hard disk it has....
but my main comp which is a ton higher at
Genuine intel family 15 model 4 processor 3000mz stepping 9 (2cpu), pentium
(r) 4cpu, 3.00 ghz 3.00gz, 512 mb ram, 521.7 hard disk so most goes onto my
main xp for digital work etc.

Pentium II of any speed is fine for XP.

64MB RAM is too low for XP (I think it will just about work, but not very well **). 128MB should be
usable so long as you don't put any anti-virus software on it (which tends to slow a low-performance
PC right down - you don't really need if you aren't going to use the internet). Personally, I would
try at add a 128MByte module if it will take it, giving you 192MB. Old PCs are given away, so you
might be able to get one for free.

** I did know someone who put XP on a laptop with 64MB of RAM, and he claimed he did some hacks (I
assume he meant turning off unused services - search for Black Viper in Google for tips. You could
probably disable quite a few if you don't use the internet or a network). I tried it out and it
worked better than I expected - boot time was around 2-3 minutes if I remember correctly, and it
wasn't annoyingly slow when it had booted. I didn't try running any Office applications mind, just
Windows Explorer, Calculator, Notepad, etc.

Hard disk size - I would say around 4Gbytes minimum, but if you install applications, you will need
more, and more still if you are going to store a significant amount of data. I would normally not
put XP on a PC with less than 7.5GBytes.

Personally, I would put a different hard drive in (you might get given one from an old PC) and
install XP on this. If there are problems, you can put the old hard drive back in and still have 98.

Lack of drivers? Well, in my experience and from what others have told me, there will be a good
change that the PC itself will work upgrade just fine. There may be problems with old software (eg
games), scanners, etc.

Not hardly.

I run XP on a P-3, 733 Mhz with 256M RAM just fine.
Even play DVDs as well.

That would have been a high-end machine for Windows 98. ;-)

Hard to believe "just fine" w/256 meg of RAM. I've upgraded a lot of
2.8GHz machines with 256 meg that were crawlers until I put another 512
meg in them. Now they boot a lot faster and can run a couple programs
without having a cup of coffee after every mouse click.

Of course everyone has their own way of working. If it's just fine for
you, I commend you on your patience.
