Need "base" CD for installing SP4?

PL

Hi!
I have the Windows 2000 SP4 CD and tried to install on a clean
harddrive, but I got the message that "Cannot install on this system"
(or something like that) whe I tried to execute the installation
program.

I did as follows:
- booted from a Windows ME boot disk (all I had...)
- tried to run the executable file from the CD,
Z:\English\Win2000\SP4\W2ksp4.exe

Is is so that
a) I need the base CD from Jan 2001 (which I don't have...)
and install that CD first?
b) I should have the W2K boot disks instead of Win ME?

You need to install Windows 2000 before you can apply a Service Pack. If
you only have Windows ME operating system, then the Service Pack CD is
useless.

Service Packs are not the operating system, they are pretty muc
just a "Giant Patch" for the system or application that they are designed for

This link tells what service packs are and how they differ from patches

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/tr...=/technet/columns/security/essays/srvpatch.as

Windows Me is not Windows 2000. Windows Me is basically
a "glorified" Windows 98se

You will need to purchase a copy of Windows 2000 Pro install
that and then upgrade to the SP4

A Legal copy of W2K pro retails between $179.00 and $200.00
IF you can find one.

Btw, any other way of obtaining any OS (other than maybe Linux)
is piracy.

If someone Gives you an original retail CD that IS NOT installed
on any other machines that is a different story.
