Need a New PST File

Need a few suggestions and how-to's please!

I just started using an automatic backup program. Everytime I change a file
on my computer, this backup program (Carbonite) will RE-back it up. The
problem is my current PST file is over 300MB!

I'd like to keep this old PST file on my computer in a way that I can easily
access it if I need to, but I'd like to start a brand new PST file, which is
the one the backup program Carbonite will be backing up all the time.

How can I accomplish this and still use my current contacts with the new PST
file?

Thanks!

Assuming an OL2003 Unicode pst 300mb is tiny.
The pst file changes, or at least its attribute, that your backup app
checks, every time you open OL. So creating a new pst will not stop this
process.
Instead try the MS OL backup addin, available free on MS OL site pages. Set
the addin to backup to another location, eg My Documents and if required
configure your backup app accordingly.

Not sure what you meant by "Assuming an OL2003 Unicode pst 300mb is tiny."
That takes a LONG time for my computer to back up (upload) onto the Internet
backup! That's why I want a smaller pst file. I don't care if it backs up
all the time, I just don't want it to be so big.

I already have the Outlook backup utility you mentioned, which I use to
backup to an external hard drive. The Carbonite is an Internet backup method.

Perhaps I should just use the Outlook backup utility only and tell Carbonite
NOT to backup that PST file??

Sorry I wasn't very clear on my first message.

thanks,

Sheri

File>New>Outlook Data File. Select the "Office Outlook Personal Folders
File (.pst)" option and click OK. Browse to the folder where you want to
place the new file (or accept the default), give the new file a name (or
accept the default), and click OK. Give the PST a display name - how it
will be named in the Navigation Pane (or accept the default - but I'd change
the name) and click OK. This will create an empty PST and add it to the
Navigation Pane's Folder List view.

Now click Tools>E-mail Accounts>Next and in the "Delivery new e-mail to the
following location" drop-down at the lower left, choose the new PST you just
created. Then stop and restart Outlook. Now, you'll see the new PST with
the "Outlook Today" icon and the old PST will still be listed. Open the
Contacts folder of the ol PST and select all the entries in it with CTRL-A.
Then click Edit>Copy to Folder. Select the new COntacts folder as the
destination and click OK. If there's other data you want to migrate, such
as the calendar data, follow the same procedure. You'll need to display the
old calendar in a table view like By Category for CTRL-A to work.

Once you've copied all you want, close the old PST with right-click >Close.

Thank you so much!!! That was EXACTLY what I needed. I followed your
directions and everything worked great! My PST file is now 1.7 MB instead of
325 MB!!! And I also figured out how to get into the old one if I need to
;o) All my Contacts copied over perfectly!

Thanks so much!

I also backup data, including pst's to a remote site, overnight, takes no
time at all.
In fact backup just completed in 6:30 mins, 20 files including 38mb of pst's
(I'm in the UK backing up to US)
