Hello,

I have NEC 3550A dual dvd burner. Fr some reason the drive tray will
not open or eject. I tried to open it in windows and while booting up
with no luck. Windows and bios recognise the drive just fine.

Pressing the open button will turn the light on the drive on but
nothing happens.

I tried using a scrw driver to force it (lightly) to open with no
success. Unless i am tying at the wrong place.

I would appreciate any help

Thanks

Straighten a paperclip (sounds silly I know <g>).
Push it straight into the tiny hole in the front panel of the drive Firmly
!.
It will release the lock mechanism.

I had this same problem with CD-ROM drives back when I worked with OLD
stuff. The first one was a faulty mechanism and I got the drive for
free. I sometimes had to open the drive with a paper clip, but I had a
CD-ROM drive. A month later the eject motor finally burned up and I
bought a Sony drive to replace it.

The second occurrence was with the above said Sony drive, this time I
lost the +12 V to the drive due to a bad connection. I'm glad I spotted
that because my CPU fan was on the same daisy chain (the CPU was so old
that you could run them without a heatsink for 15 minutes or so without
an overheat issue and for weeks on without the fan working).

It will release the lock mechanism.

Then take it back to the supplier you got it from before the warranty
runs out. It is clearly defective so get a new one.

I should have mentioned that i already tried using a clip to push in
the hole (sounds nasty)

under closer inspection, i opened the drive and start hearing a whine
noise like the motor is not working to open and close the tray. This
made me feel that either the powersupply is not giving enough power or
the motor actually not working any more.

I tried a diffirent a power supply and it worked fine!!

so thanks for all who suggested a solution, god bless :)

There is a small hole in the faceplate of the drive- it is a release for the
drive door. A paper clip will fit in it (or you may have gotten a small tool
along with the drive). Put the paper clip in the hole and push (may take a
little force, but not much). The drive door should open. This can be done
with or without power to the unit.

Some software programs require that the cd/dvd be ejected using that
programs software application, and the door will not open manually. After
ejecting the cd/dvd through the program, the door will open and close
normally, until the next time you use that same program. Where you using a
cd/dvd writing program prior to the problem?
