Really interesting bit is that the asteroid has its own moon.

I never quite get the " near miss " thing. It just sounds stupid to me.
To me a " near miss " implies that something nearly missed, which to me would mean it actually hit.

So in the case of this asteroid which never actually hit, to me it should really be a " near hit "

Miss that was near to being a hit = near miss.

In Astronomical terms, 10million miles is near
3.6million is scary
