Napster installer error

B

I have Windows XP and I am trying to download the napster installer.
Everything works up until configuring the napster burn engine. I get a
registry error box there was a problem running the napster installer.
Download and try again. I get this over and over. Napster support after
many tries says something is wrong with my computer. Any suggestions? Should
I
delete everything to do with Napster in the registry and try again?

Nope.

This isn't a Napster support group.

It's a Windows XP Operating System support group.

GOT GOOGLE?

Since it is a registry error and I do have Windows XP I thought someone might
help me here.

Direct me to the"correct" group and don't be such an ass about it.

I do have Google and it is of no help.

Post the exact text of the error message. Also, it isn't clear from your
post whether you are saving the installer file you download or trying to
run it from the web. If the latter, save the file first.

I have run it from the web and from a saved file on my computer.

There is a box that says "Registry error" in the upper left hand corner.
There is a large red circle with an X in it followed by the message "There
was a problem running the Napster Installer. Please re-download the installer
and try again."

Thanks.

I can only surmise that the Napster install is unable to write to the
Registry. Standalone computer or on a domain? Limited/standard user or
administrator? Got any security programs installed that prevent writing
to the Registry where Napster wants to do it?

You can track where Napster is trying to write with the free
Filemon/Regmon utilities from Sysinternals (MS):

Wow. There are many "name not found" and "fast io disallowed" messages under
napster setup. The first one is a

file system

write file

Settings\Temp\{072B0D11-B0F2-4C0F-A241-5A3EF9BEBC29}\Disk1\ISSetup.dll

Stand alone computer, administrator, spybot search and destroy,
spywareblaster, CA antivirus, windows firewall.

Spybot Search & Destroy may be preventing registry changes. Open it and
change to the Advanced Mode and look under Tools. Uncheck any
immunization/protection. I have noticed with the latest version that
even if you install it specifically unchecking the two boxes for this
sort of protection, after installation one of the protection options
will be automatically enabled *anyway*. Not nice behavior, although I do
still like the program for removing malware.

CA Antivirus may also have a similar feature. Look carefully in its options.
