Name missing on Welcome screen

As of yesterday, concidentally when I downloaded all the new security
updates, my name - Ann H - no longer appears on the Welcome screen. My name
does appear on the start menu. When I go into user accounts (in Control
Panel), there is only one account - Administrator Ann H- which is me as I am
the sole user of this computer. The aspnet account is no longer there as
well.
When I type "control userpasswords2" in run I see 3 accounts: The
Adminstrator, AnnH, and the ASPNET. "Users must enter a user name and
password" IS checked for all 3. I also use the Tweak PowerToys. Under
Logon "Show AnnH" on Welcome Screen IS checked. Under Autologon "Log on
automatically at system start up" is NOT checked.
I am stumped as to what changed. I have not touched any of these settings.
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Ann,

Activate the Guest account and see what happens. Also, take a look here:

Start/Run/Regedit

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows
NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList

Add the username and set the value to 1 will cause that user, to show up on
the Welcome screen.

Added tip:

Hide User or Add User to the Welcome Screen (Line 22)

Hi Ann

I don't know why this happened, but I do know a way to show user name
on the Welcome screen

There is a Microsoft program called TweakUI, which is free and you ca
customise all kinds of settings on Windows XP. The link below wil
take you to the page where you can download it (and othe
PowerToys)

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/downloads/powertoys/xppowertoys.msp

There is a Logon menu on this - you will see it down near the botto
of the list. You will notice the option to Show AnnH on the Welcom
Screen

Check the options that you want and it should work next time you star
up your computer

TweakUI is a great little program

Good luck

Hi Kelly:
Activating the Guest Account had no effect. Interestingly, when I go
Start>Log off, the regular (for me) Windows Welcome appears with my name
(AnnH) and now the Guest account. Which makes me wonder, who does the
computer think I am.

I am hesitant to edit the registry. I did download your small .vbs file and
it did not work. I received the following error message.
Script: C:\Documents and Settings\AnnH\My Documents\xp_unhide_users.vbs
Line:17
Char:3
Error: Unable to remove registry key
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WindowsNT\Current
Version\Winlogon\SpecialAccounts\UserList\AnnH"
Code: 80070002
Source: WshShell.RegDelete

So....do you have any ideas?

Hi Roly:
I am using Tweak PowerToys and under the Logon function I do have it checked
for my name AnnH to appear on the Welcome screen. That is what is so
maddening and frustrating about all of this. Also the Autologon function is
turned out. Therefore, my name should be appearing on the screen.
Thank you for your help. Any other ideas would be appreciated.

I also experienced this problem after the latest batch of updates. I
was able to fix it by resetting the password of the affected account
through the control userpasswords2 interface.

Thanks for posting and how interesting. However, one would have to gain
System Admin access to do this and from what I have read, this password for
many, but not all, has been changed as well. Not good from any standpoint.
(((
