Nachi Worm

Someone please help me, I got the worm Nachi, so stupid
me figures well I better reformat my computer, so I
formatted, re-installed and lo and behold I have it
already and this is with me just installing the windows
XP, and then the Anti- Virus program, I never touched the
internet or even got all my updates, so how do I get rid
of this virus?? Please help me before I lose my mind

If you didn't touch the Internet, how did you go for the
updates? Was the CD you used possibly infected? Are you on
a LAN and someone else on your network has the bug?

According to various security sources (Microsoft and
otherwise) you have about 2.5 minutes on the net before
you'll get hit with some kind of virus or trojan. Were you
disconnected from the Internet when you reinstalled?

According to a security seminar I attended, the
recommended install procedure is as follows:

1. Disconnect from the Internet and LAN
2. Format and re-install
3. Install your virus software
4. Get behind a firewall or enable Internet Connection
Firewall on your machine's NIC(s).
5. Connect to your LAN and Internet.
6. RUN do not walk, do not pass Go, to the Windows update
site. Load all critical updates.

Alternative to #6:
A) Use the Microsoft Security Baseline Analyzer CD to load
all the patches before you even go online;
B) See if your System Administrator is running Software
Update Services (SUS) on your LAN.

7. Run the Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer.

8. Update your virus software signature files
