Mysterious *.idx files appeared

Ken Isaacson

XP Pro

This morning, when routinely navigating to a folder where I keep
miscellaneous documents of varying formats, I notices a ton of "idx" files
(i.e. 1,287) that were created at the same time (i.e. same date and time on
a day last week).

I have no idea what they are, and whether they can be safely deleted.

Their names are like ST**.idx, SA**idx, where the **'s are either letters or
numbers.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Title: IDX FILES MY DOCUMENTS/MY MUSIC sponsored by

I opened my document/my documents files where I store my mp3
files and was suprised to find hundreds of files that windows can't open.
They are IDX files. I want to get rid of them I think. Should I, or are
they important? Where did they come from should I keep them, or delete them
with ctrl/delete.
My music files are not shared music files, but my documents/my
music
I guess I could start using my shared files, my music folder
instead. Any help is welcomed. d_may

.idx files are usually created by a whole variety of database
engines to allow fast searching. Generally when data is entered into a
database it is in a random order and yet the chances are you want look at it
in a more logical order once you have entered it into the database. So an
'INDex' file is created which enables this fast searching. In most databases
you can elect to switch indexing on or off. With fast pc's these days 'on'
is the default. It is possible to delete some index files and the database
will just re-create them but my strong advice is don't touch them.

Hope this helps

yes, this helps, I think I will take your advice and leave well
enough alone for now, I remember i had indexing files turnned off, and then
reformated and now they (indexing) is on , so that explaines why they are
showing up now (default). I like faster searching! Your 50 points are on
the way, but may wait a day or two to see what other may have to say, (you
understand). Thanks for the correct information, and your helpful advice.

Those files usually get created by CD burning software and
usually get deleted after sucessful burn session.
If not sucessful program tends to forget them behind.I have seen
nero burning rom do this.
These files are safe to delete.
Index points to file and not viceversa.Original file is intact.
Delete them and do it with pleasure....killthemall....

Also indexes that XP use are part of the file, something like an
attribute for fast searching and so on.
XP does not create standalone index files. These files are NOT
part of the operating system and are safe to delete.
