What "sharing" have you enabled? Public folder, maybe?

If you're going to allow access to anything other than public folders, you have
to setup an account for sharing, and you have to permission the folders in
question. None of that is done for you, you have to do it yourself.

Thanks for the reply. I allowed sharing on my c and f drive in vista, but my
xp stll could not open or explore the drives. I installed Norton 360. any
possibility that this has blocked my xp?

Norton contains an anti-worm component that will block Server Message Blocks,
just like a personal firewall will. You have to either configure it properly,
or un install N360, religiously using instructions from Symantec.

Just to add to what Chuck had to say Norton has a removal tool that works
well if you want to remove it all as shown in the link below.

http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

But first I would try disabling the worm protection and/or booting into Safe
Mode with networking to see if you can access the shares then and if so that
would definitely indicate a problem with some application filtering IP
traffic. Access denied or lack of permissions problems mean you need to
create user accounts on the Vista computer that have passwords and then you
log onto another computer on the network with that user account/password to
try and access the shares and the share AND NTFS [folder properties -
security] permissions need to include the user or a group the user is a
member of such as everyone or users. Note that personal firewalls on client
computer can also block access to shares on another computer which is a
common problem if the firewall does not trust the local network. Also try to
access computer with share by it's IP as in \\xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx\sharename in
case name resolution problems are at fault.
