my voice coming out of speaker as well as chat party

Using WinXP Home and Windows Messenger:
If i use the seperate microphone and speakers my voice
comes out over my speakers as well as the other party's
voice with whom I'm chatting.
If i use the headset with built-in mic the same occurs -
i hear myself through the headset as well as the other
party.
Under both scenerios the other party hears my voice come
out in a delayed sound like some inhuman drone. My
contention has been that it is a bad sound card in this
new Dell Inspiron 26oo but a Dell tech still thinks it is
a configuration issue. Any thoughts?

Try using just a headset and make sure your speakers are not on so that
sound from them can also feed into your mike. Also make sure the other party
does not have a speaker on that can feed into his mike.

I have tried without the speakers on and still i hear
myself in the headset and the other party would get the
inhuman type droning sound on the other end. The other
party is using the mic and speakers built into his
laptop. I was told i should never hear myself through
the speakers or headset. Is this true?

If you are hearing yourself it is because the speakers at the other party
are on and are feeding back into HIS mike.
The droning sound could be the sound of a fan motor getting into the mike.
Also check your mixer settings and mute any sources you are not using.

Your sound system is misconfigured. You should never hear yourself from
your speakers, only from a feedback, but that is obvious. Now to FIX: 1.
Double click the little speaker icon in your system tray and then select
Options/Properties and make sure the Microphone is NOT checked in the
Playback mode then select the Recording mode and make sure it IS checked.

Actually, I will hear myself through the speakers (or
headset) without being connect to another party - just by
speaking into the mic with the speakers on. It was my
understanding this should never occur. Is this the case?

Thanks for your replies.

Hello Joel - you were kind enough to guide me to that
setting before and it is configured properly as you
described. As i replied to "Striker" below, I can hear
myself through the speakers regardless of whether i am
chatting with someone or simply disconnected from WM and
talking into the mic. The same applies to using a
headset with built-in mic. Is this still a cnofiguration
issue or a bad sound card?

thanks for yor responses,

The only other thing I can think of is that you are not connected/and or
selecting your Sound Card and you are using some other source, such as a
Logitech camera or such and that is what is selected.
When you run the Wizard make sure you have selected the Sound Card.

Yup, it is the correct sound card selection and
properties that have been turned on. The same applies
for the sound wizard. it recognizes the mic as well as
the speakers in it's tests. Any other thoughts?

Thanks,
