My Vendor threw away my xp pro disks!

jd

I bought 7 licenses and installed xp pro and activated all of them.
I have the COA sticker on the cases.
The guy threw out all my cd's by mistake. Can I just burn a few copies?
They were oem cd's.
Thanks.

From what you stated, I THINK you have OEM licenses.. (Stickers on cases...)
Technically, any OEM media should work fine - usually.

So the short answer to your question is "Yes, a burned copy of an OEM
Windows XP CD should work for you."

No you may not make burned copies of the media.
You need to get your OEM or "the guy" to give you the media that they owe
you.

thats what all the vendors say. If he threw them out it is
his mistake, he will have no problem providing you with
replacements of the disks that you must have purchased from
him / her ?

Does Microsoft still sell replacement media for essentially a shipping
charge ?

Yes see

but NOT for OEM products - you need to contact the OEM for that.

I'm confused. If the software *licence* is the important bit, and the user
has proof of purchase in a receipt, presumably, plus the COA sticker and the
other bits and pieces that come in an OEM windows licence pack, why should
it matter who made the install media, providing its the right type?

I understand this to be correct and appropriate burned media
would be OK, but I would be going back to the person who
sold the media and then threw it away - seems a bit sus to
me ? pay $$ for something accidently discarded ?

I don't have an OEM CD to hand but the vast majority of our product CDs have
a statement on the CD surface label along the lines of "Do not make illegal
copies of this disk".
So while the license is important there are certain restrictions on the
production of CDs of Microsoft copyrighted material especially if someone
else is providing you with a "copied" CD - you have no idea of the true
content and quality of that disk etc.

But if I make a copy to use within the terms of my licence agreement surely
that is a "legal" copy.

On that we agree. I'd only want to use copies I had made myself.
