My system enters some strange standby mode.

Hi
Sometimes my system enters some strange standby mode.

I have an XPE system with minlogon, network but no explorer or control panel.
If the mouse isn't moved, the monitor is turned off after 20 min (as it should).
After a long time (varying number of hours) it enters this strange mode.

1) A small program that only sends brodcast messages still works.
(The messages are received by other computers).

2) Some programs seems to have stopped.
(Other computers can't communicate with them).

If I move the mouse this strange state disappers.

If I use a little utility that simulates mouse movments every
10 minutes the problem does never occur.

I have downloded PowerCfg.exe from XP SP2 RC1.
It is a command line version of Control Panel - Power Options.
It shows that the power sheme is "Always On" (as it should).
and that the harddisks never shall be turned off.

The graphic adapter is Chips & Technologies 69030.
On an identical CPU-board I have disabled this adapter
and is using a PMC board with Nvidia graphics.
On this CPU-board the problem never occurs.

My thoughts:

Is it the harddisks that goes to a standby mode, and only
programs that uses the disk that stops ?

Is it Chips & Technologies 69030 that is causing this ?

I need help to solve this problem !

Lasse,

Do you have this QFE installed:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...bb-5a04-447c-9c33-de44f1d2471b&displaylang=en

Btw, is it ACPI BIOS on your target? or APM support?

Have you tried playing with "AcPolicy" and "DcPolicy" binary values?

This might not be your problem at all but worth to mention.

Using PowerCfg.exe you can query some power applet parameters, e.g. /monitor-timeout-ac, /monitor-timeout-dc , or, more interesting
to you, /disk-timeout-ac, /disk-timeout-dc. Check out the tool usage here: http://www.jsiinc.com/SUBL/tip5500/rh5594.htm.

Hi - Thank you for the response.

In TD I use "Standard PC" with settings "Always On".
BIOS Settings says "Power Management/APM Disabled"

PowerCfg /query ==>

Field Description Value
----------------- -----
Name Always On
Numerical ID 3
Turn off monitor (AC) After 20 mins
Turn off monitor (DC) After 15 mins
Turn off hard disks (AC) Never
Turn off hard disks (DC) After 30 mins
System standby (AC) Not Supported
System standby (DC) Not Supported
System hibernates (AC) Never
System hibernates (DC) Never
Processor Throttle (AC) Not Supported
Processor Throttle (DC) Not Supported

I have verified that it is the (AC) settings that are used
by temorary setting "Turn off monitor (AC)" to one minute.

I do not have this QFE installed.
I have read the page
It says: "Minlogon fails to properly process a kernel message which performs
the final steps to set the system into the Standby or Hibernate state."

It seems to me that this is to make it possible to enable these
Turnoff/standby functions. I want to disable them.
It seems a bit scary to modify TDs database now that
everything works OK. (except this PowerCfg problem).

As PowerCfg shows, the harddisk should never be turned off.
Could it be something other than than disk that stops several programs.

This problem is not so easy to handle, it can take hours
before it occurs and as soon I touch the mouse, the error disappers.

If you use Standard PC HAL, I don't know what StandBy mode you are getting to. It shouldn't be supported.
Is the board ACPI compatible or not? It could be that switching to ACPI may fix your problems (with the settings you need).
BIOS Settings says "Power Management/APM Disabled"

Use apmstat.exe tool to determine the status of APM on the device.

You can always "backup" the database (deattach the DB using SQL Enterprise Manager first) and Repository - just copy copy the entire
folder "\Windows Embedded Data". Then if you play with components, you can always go back to the previous version.

I did not say the QFE will fix your problems. It is just safe to install it and may fix some of your problems. Testing will show.

Also, you mentioned "Chips & Technologies 69030" display adapter. Do you know what power capabilities are supported on it? (D0, D3?)
What Power State Mapping is set for the adapter?
You can check all that with Device Manager (or devcon). When use DevMan, don't forget to set DEVMGR_SHOW_DETAILS=1 environment var
first.
