Well you will need to have a working sound card and drivers if you want
anything to come out of the speakers. So it appears that it wasn't the
speakers that failed, but the sound card. So back to the store.

So how much do these cost? and are you sure its the sound card?

Right Click on My Computer/Properties/Hardware/Device manager. You will
find your sound card there. See if it has a question mark or exclamation
point next to it.

All the drivers within Sounds, video and game controllers all seem to be
working, there is a question mark next to the icon for multimedia audio
controller, could this be the problem and how do i fix it?

The multimedia audio controller IS you sound card. You need to install the
correct Windows XP drivers for it. If the audio card is part of the
motherboard, look at the motherboard manual(s), CD or manufacturer's web site.
If you added the audio card as a separate device, locate the install CD.

:

Turn off your computer. Unplug it. Open the side. Remove the sound card.
Plug it back in. Reboot. Turn your computer off. Unplug it. Put the
sound card back in. Plug it back in. Reboot and have your sound card CD
handy and follow the New Hardware prompts.

You need to either use the set up disk or download the drivers from the
sound card manufacturer's web site and point the hardware wizard to
wherever you saved the download.

I have the same problem. Somebody "help".
I reinstalled windows xp the other day. All sound cards are listed and say
they are working properly. However, my speakers do not show up in the
hardware devices. And I have tried many times to install new hardware, the
wizard is not picking up the speakers. They were not unpluged during windows
reinstall and nothing else about them changed. I have since unpluged trying
to get hardware wizard to recognize them as new hardware...with no luck. What
else can I do?

Speakers NEVER show up in hardware.. check that sound isn't muted.. you
might want to check WMP and the volume control panel..
