"My Pictures" folder shows up as "Michael's Pictures"

M

Michael Golden

I log onto my computer as "Michael".

I wanted to put all of the pictures in my personal "My
Pictures" folder into the shared folders, so all users of
my computer could view and manipulate them. So I dragged
my "My Pictures" folder from the "My Documents" folder
into the "Shared Documents"

When I log in as "Michael", that folder shows up as "My
Pictures". Whenever another viewer looks into
the "Shared Documents" folder, they see a folder
called "Michael's Pictures" instead of a folder
called "My Pictures". I want it to show up as "My
Pictures" for everyone.

Windows XP does not allow me to rename the folder to "My
Pictures", because it is already called that. (There
must be some underlying property associating that folder
with the user "Michael".) Windows XP does not allow me
to move the folder back into the "My Documents" folder
for the user "Michael" because it requires there to be
a "My Pictures" folder at all times.

How can I convince XP to disassociate the user "Michael"
from the "My Pictures" folder in the "Shared Documents"
folder.

Thanks!

-Michael

That worked brilliantly. I went opened up

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\My
Pictures\Desktop.ini

and removed the field that said

Owner=Michael

and all was right with the world.

Thanks for the pointer!

Great article:

If I change this...

My Documents

Owner=some name
Personalized=5
PersonalizedName=My Documents

....to this...

My Documents

Owner=some name
Personalized=5

....can I stop XP's creepy fiddling with names? I can't abide by a
"file manager" that lies to me about what I am looking at.

cquirke;
I don't understand your reference to [fiddling with names].
Do you want to change the name of My Documents?

My My Documents\Desktop.ini is blank. 0 bytes, 0 bytes, empty, nada!
My, my, my.

According to David Candy, Windows will lie to you.

From: David Candy
[You have desktop.ini because it's where it gets it's localized name from - Startup in the English
language and whatever in whatever language. The folder stays as Startup but lies about it's name
depending on language version. In English language the lie is the same as the folder name but you
are seeing the lie not the folder name. One place in English where the lie is different to the real
name is Shared Documents whose real name is just Documents.]

[Type in Start - Run
%allusersprofile%

Note the name shared documents. Open it and move the desktop.ini somewhere. Go back to
%allusersprofile%\ and it should say just Documents. This is it's true name. Shared Documents is the
name that only English XP users see. Other language see different things but the real name doesn't
change.]

Hope this helps. Let us know.

No, I want Explorer to show me file system items with the name as held
in the file system, without "editorialization".

I don't want MySafePic.JPG.exe to be called MySafePic.JPG,
\\BOSSPC\C\WINDOWS\TEMP to be called TEMP,
ThisFileIsHidden.exe to be called <invisible>,
or "Fred's Wretched Files" to be called "My Wretched Files".

The first three I have more or less whacked; the fourth annoys still.

Yep; that's what I'm on about... every time the system lies, it
creates opportunities for malware (and Murphy) to exploit that lie.

The first thing you have to remember is, "Murphy was an
optimist." ;o)

I think this may be beyond me. You may have to take it
up with Fred. :D

I know where you can get a utility to change the name of
"My Wretched Files", but I don't know how to stop
Windows from lying.
==============
Only yesterday, I found another hidden file, quite by accident.
I thought that I had gotten rid of PCPitstop.dll eons ago.
I did an analysis for defrag. It said PCPitstop.dll was fragmented.
I thought that was odd because I didn't have a PCPitstop.dll anymore.
I F3'd in the Registry and found this little gem.

C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLO~1\

Well,
Start | Run | C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLO~1\
exposed PCPitstop.dll. The damn thing's Shift + Deleted
now and so is every reference to PCPitstop in the Registry.
Still a couple of *.dll's left in there, but they're legit.
==========
Well I rambled on a bit. Maybe the C:\WINDOWS\DOWNLO~1\
tip will make up for not knowing how to make Windows quit lying.
