my PC keeps losing a connection

Hi All,

I've suddenley started having a problem when I'm browsing the internet. Its
OK for a while and then when I search for a page, it will suddenley say
'Internet Explorer could not find page' so I can then use 'Diagnose Network
Connection Problems' and it fixes the conncetion which lets me browse again,
but not for long before it happens again. At the same time my Outlook Express
will be unable to send or receive e-mails. This has only just started
happening in last few weeks but its very annoying and is really slowing me
down. Can anyone help or suggest anything I can do to fix this permanently ?

All help or advice appreciated....

Regards,

Caroline

What type of connection equipment does your ISP provide ? Cable Modem
or DSL Modem. Most if not all have a web interface where you can check
the connection/event log. Regardless of type you may need to update the
firmware of the device or request a replacement from your ISP. You should
also monitor the "Activity" light on the modem and determine if the loss of
connectivity is your PC's NIC or the modem connection to the ISP's network.

Do a thorough check for malware, following all of the steps at one of these

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
For quite a few people it's by installing programs like Messenger Plus,
whose ads for malware don't identify the malware as such and try to convince
you that you owe it to the author. See also:

Don't ever do a "default" install of anything. Always choose Custom and see
what else is being carried along. Don't install any extras you're not sure
of.

Hi and thanks for your response. I have windows XP sp3, and it is connected
via a set top box. Usually the connection lights on the set top box are fine
when my PC loses its connection. I did check with virgin media from their
side and they said their side was fine.

How do I update the firmware, sorry these are terms i am not familiar with.
If there is anything I can do to sort this out I would really like to know.

Regards,

Caroline
