My network places - no information

i replaced a motherboard (and memory) after a memory failure and repaired the
XPSP2 Pro installation.

Computer is part of a home network with a dlink router

All applications etc work but when i open My Network Places, there is
nothing displayed in window.

I can ping other computers by name and ip address
All computers are on same workgroup and within the router ip address range.
all have the same subgroupo 255.255.255.0

I cannot add a network place either by ip address or name
Also when browsing to add a network place, the selection does not show the
Microsoft Windows Network field.

Trying to select show computers in workgroup also does not display any result.

Other computers can access my computer and shares as previously
I can access the web correctly

I have tried with both simple file sharing selected /not selected and have
the NETBUI - TCP/IP switch on for the network protocol

I hace replaced the network card with the same result

extensive searching thw web has not produced any answers so i am seeking
help to correct this anomoly. As background i have set up at laest 20
networks both workgroups and domains

my router is a dLink 704 and has not changed. i will try with fixed ip and
netgear hub to see if it works but i doubt it as i cannot see the local
computer which is typical if the problem is external to the computer. past
experience has shown that a change of network card has cured the missing
computers but this has not worked. I removed all old entries in the registry
to nsure a clean installation - also to no avail. a pointer may be that the
"Microsfot windows network" folder does not appear in any of the links where
browsing is required eg add network place or search browse.
