My network connection works on some sites but not others

My network connection will access some sites but not others. IOne of the
addresses I can't get is Windows update. Using dial-up to do this since DSL
won;twork.My husband is on the same network and both of his computers work
ok. I tried using his IP address but could not make mine work, but if he
changes his computer to my IP address it still works for him. Tried
reinstalling windows xp pro sp1 (not 2) and that didn't help. Ping attempts
time out. -- Help I am going nuts.

This sounds like a DNS hijack to me.

First, give LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>, or
WinsockFix <http://www.tacktech.com/display.cfm?ttid=257> a shot.

Search your entire system drive, including hidden and system folders, for file
"hosts". There is one legit copy, in C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\ (for
Windows NT/2000/XP). The others are possibly bogus, and part (but just part) of
the problem. Examine the contents of each copy found, using Notepad. Scroll to
the end of each Hosts file, by hitting Ctrl-End, then back up to the top, page
by page, before deciding that the file is empty. Look out for blank lines at
the beginning and end of the file, after localhost, placed there by an exploit!

How current is your virus protection? Try one or more of these free online
virus scans, which should complement your current protection:

<http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan>
<http://www.ravantivirus.com/scan/>
<http://security.symantec.com/ssc/home.asp>
<http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp>

Now check for, and learn to defend against, additional problems - adware,
crapware, spyware.

Start by downloading each of the following additional free tools:
AdAware <http://www.lavasoftusa.com/>
CWShredder <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4086.html>
CoolWWWSearch.SmartSearch (v1/v2) MiniRemoval
<http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4113.html>
HijackThis <http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155>
LSP-Fix and WinsockXPFix <http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm>
Spybot S&D <http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download>
Stinger <http://us.mcafee.com/virusInfo/default.asp?id=stinger>

Create a separate folder for HijackThis, such as C:\HijackThis - copy the
downloaded file there. AdAware and Spybot S&D have install routines - run them.
The other downloaded programs can be copied into, and run from, any convenient
folder.

First, run Stinger. Have it remove any problems found.

Next, close all Internet Explorer and Outlook windows, and run
CoolWWWSearch.SmartSearchMiniRemoval, then CWShredder. Have the latter fix all
problems found.

Next, run AdAware. First update it ("Check for updates now"), configure for
full scan (<http://forum.aumha.org/viewtopic.php?t=5877>), then scan. When
scanning finishes, remove all Critical Objects found.

Next, run Spybot S&D. First update it ("Search for updates"), then run a scan
("Check for problems"). Trust Spybot, and delete everything ("Fix Problems")
that is displayed in Red.

Then, run HijackThis ("Scan"). Do NOT make any changes immediately. Save the
HJT Log.
<http://forums.spywareinfo.com/index.php?showtopic=227>
<http://www1.spywareinfo.com/articles/hijacked/prevent.php>

Finally, have your HJT log interpreted by experts at one or more of the
following security forums (and please post a link to your forum posts, here):
Aumha: <http://forum.aumha.org/index.php>
Net-Integration: <http://forums.net-integration.net/>
Spyware Info: <http://forums.spywareinfo.com/>
Spyware Warrior: <http://spywarewarrior.com/index.php>
Tom Coyote: <http://forums.tomcoyote.org/>

If removal of any spyware affects your ability to access the internet (some
spyware builds itself into the network software, and its removal may damage your
network), run LSP-Fix and / or WinsockXPFIx.

Chuck

Thanks, I tried all of your suggestions. It was nice to find my system was
clean, however, my problems remains. Still can't connect to some sites on
DSL.

Does your broadband service, by any chance, use PPPoE?

When you ping these sites, does ping give an ip address? See if you can ping
the problem sites by ip address rather than name. Find out ip address using
NSLookup, or verify address using Reverse Lookup:
