my problem is "my laptop is getting freezed by giving a beep after sometime
every time when i start it and few applications doesn't run when i click on
it, click does nothing like .exe files
please help me, i am facing this problem since i got some viruses while
surfing and downloading and i removed them using AVG 8.5 trial" i don't know
what is the problem now? may be some harddisk or same software related
problem please help me

I am using Windows XP with sevice pack 2+.
I am not sure about viruses but may be something is wrong because my
computer sometimes automatically opens some sites in browser And sometimes
automatically closes my running application/browser. But I have scanned it by
AVG 8.5 trial

One thing also I want you to know that I did many times switch off my
computer directly using power button because I didn’t have any choice because
it was freezed that time.

I am not able to check drive from properties and also not able to defragment
drive as it says "system could not check drive" or "system could not
defragment drive" as soon as i click on check now or defragment buttons.

Sounds like the virus has done quite a bit of damage. If I were in
your shoes I'd back up any files I'd want to keep and format the HD
and do a clean install and start afresh.* It may be possible to fix
your current installation but it'll take a lot more effort and it may
not work. Run your anti virus again and download and run Spybot Search
and Destroy...then do a "repair" of Windows from your CD.

*Just make sure you have a copy of Windows XP on CD.

sometimes it works for an hour or 2 or more very fine but sometimes it freezes
i installed IE 8 but i was facing some error messsage after installing IE 8
so i unistalled it manually because i was not having uninstall/remove button
in add/remove programs under control panel.

NB: The beeping may indicate a failing internal battery or even an impending
hardware failure, both of which would be unrelated to the following.

Backup your personal data, then do a format & clean install of Windows.
Please note that a Repair Install (AKA in-place upgrade) will NOT fix this!

cf. http://michaelstevenstech.com/cleanxpinstall.html#steps

After the clean install, you'll have the equivalent of a "new computer" so
take care of everything on the following page before otherwise connecting
the machine to the internet or a network and before using a USB key that

Your laptop has a hidden restore partition that you access by rebooting the
machine and pressing <Ctrl> <F11> while the blue bar with "www.dell.com"
appears at the top of the screen. This is a destructive reinstall that
returns your computer to the condition it was in when it left the factory.
ALL DATA AND APPLICATIONS INSTALLED SINCE THEN WILL BE LOST. Since you are
away from home, DON'T DO THIS until you are home. Make sure you backup ALL of
your data and locate the install media for your applications before restoring
the computer. Install Service Pack 3 after the restoration and before putting
your applications back on.

In the meantime, download and run Malwarebytes antimalware, Spybot Search
and Destroy, and Superantispyware. These may clean your computer up enough to
make it more usable until you get home.

Uninstall Malwarebytes and Spybot Search and Destroy. Download the latest
versions of these and reinstall. SuperAntispyware has a free version, you may
have to look for it on their website. If your computer will boot in safe
mode, run these in safe mode. It may buy you some time.

Pa Bear is correct, your system is seriously compromised. When you get home
restore your computer and follow his advice regarding your computer's
security.

The beep that you reported could be indicative of a hardware failure. Dell
has a diagnostic utility for your laptop on their website that you should run
before you restore the machine. You will need to fix any hardware issues
before restoration. If the hard drive is failing, make sure you make a set of
recovery disks from the hidden partition while you still can, otherwise you
will have to buy those from Dell. SAVE YOUR DATA TO EXTERNAL MEDIA NOW, WHILE
YOU STILL HAVE A CHANCE.

Well, you should have thought about all that before deciding to allow your
computer to connect to the internet and networks without a functional &
fully-updated anti-virus application installed and without being fully
patched at Windows Update. "As ye sow, so shall ye reap."

Alok, good to see that your computer is running well. Malwarebytes and
Spybot Search and Destroy are good applications. Reinstall and run them in
safe mode, they might find a few more things. Also, please consider PA Bear's
advice on your computer's security. Take care.
