My HP pavilion won't boot...

I installed Pinnacle software (that I now find is no longer supported) on my
HP pavilion ze4600 that has XP Pro w/sp3. Now it will not boot. Can I
obtain a rescue CD that will enable me to uninstall that bad software or
somehow fix my problem? Scan for a virus or spyware or whatever? TIA, Paul

Try booting to Safe Mode, using the "Last Known Working Configuration".
If successful, immediately uninstall the program.

Safe Mode Menu accessible by repeatedly pressing F8 ( 1/2 sec intervals )
between the BIOS post screen and the appearance of the XP Flag logo.

You need to tell us what exactly happens at boot time. How far does it get?
What messages do you see on the screen?

All I get is the small hp logo in the center of the screen. f8 or f2 or esc
are all ignored - I've held the power button down to shut the laptop off,
then tried again. I've also depressed the reset button in the hole in the
bottom of the laptop.

I let it sit for a long time, on, with the logo showing. At some point, it
gave me verbiage that let me press f1 to continue. I did, and windows came
up partway, and is now stuck again with the windows screen with the
thermometer, stuck - it was moving for a while.

Did you try Safe Mode and LKGC suggested by the other respondents? If none
of those works then you'll have to do a manual System Restore. It's a bit
scary but it works - see here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/307545.

Press F1 indicates there is some hardware issue, Windows isn't even on
the menu at that point. Perhaps you may read the "verbiage" that came up
with the "Press F1 to continue", and get an idea of what hardware is not
responding correctly. Then you may contact HP for solutions.
