My friends computer is windows xp and after updating it wont start

Hi My friend hasnt updated in along time i showed her how to update it needed
62 critical so after it asked to restart the computer but when it restarted
a black menu came up and said safe mode or normal i clickec the safe mode but
nothing happened so we rebooted and tried normal mode but it wouldnt restart
or go to desk top. Only a black screen appeared how can we restart it?

Boot to safe mode...(hit F8 just before windows loads)
then uninstall the updates or perform a system restore.
