The c:\my documents\username\... folder is the only copy you have.
Windows (or Microsoft) wants you to get to it from other places so it
shows up and "my documents" in several places. Most likely like you
already stated its a shortcut to the real deal. You see it most
anywhere. I'm going out on a limb saying this, but I get the felling
that *Desktop* and *My Documents* are two things that MS wanted you to
use. I find a lot of download defaults etc initially pointing to one
of those two things.

But there is only one Desktop and mydocs for you! There is a different
set for another user on that pc etc. That's why MS seems to do it.
Its there way of keeping your junk (and I say that kindly) separate from
others on the PC. Same with *Program Files*, this is where programs
go, and there is only one of those.

Of course this is all saying you have a standard default system and
don't screw with major settings. And of course I take a bit of
liberty in trying to out think MS.

Have fun.

I already answered this in another thread. Next time please only make one
post about a subject. I'm not going to repeat what I wrote. Short answer:
you only have one My Documents folder so leave everything alone.
