My Document Folder

Why do I have a MY DOCUMENT folder at top of tree and a separate folder using
my name & documents; eg: tom's documents that is down the filing tree near
shared documents folder but not in the shared documents folder? Where do I
set my folders? Either in MY DOCUMENTS or Tom's Documents?

check how many users use your machine, also have you changed a user
name, another thing could be that you are misinterpreting the tree
structure of the Documents and Settings folder. C:\Documents and
Settings\Your Name\My documents is a natural tree structure for your
documents.

They're actually aliases for the same folder. Try putting something in one
and then looking in the other.

If you're logged in as user "Tom" then "My documents" and "Tom's Documents"
represent the same location.

Thank you, infact I did change/switch the users names (my wife and I)
immediately upon set up because I mistakenly set up some things in the wrong
user accounts so I just switched the names. I understand from the other
answers about the alias folder name but should my wifes user name folder be
showing up in my account and visa versa? This is what is happening now.
Thanks for any and all tips!

The reason you are seeing this is because you can't just change the name
of an account - doing that doesn't change any of the underlying files
and folders. What you should have done - and can still do - is make
entirely new accounts for you and your wife. Copy the correct user
account to the appropriate new one.

Go to the User Account applet in Control Panel and make a new account
for "Tom-1" and a new account for "Mary-1" (obviously you can't use the
same names you used for the original accounts). Log in once to each
account.

If the account named "Mary" is really Tom's account then you will want
to copy that account to the new Tom-1, and the same for Tom>to>Mary-1.
This is not complicated to do. Follow these instructions:

Copy a User Account -

Lockergnome article about copying user account -

After you've imported any email and addresses to the new accounts and
everything looks right, you can go to the User Accounts applet and
delete the original (wrong) accounts.
