My docs redirection fails to update when i user moves to another O

I have win 2k sp 4 environment with AD. My boss setup my doc redirection via
“Advanced- Specify locations for various user groups†in AD GPO.

It work fine until a user moves from one ou to another.

Here is the setup. Each user has a home folder that resides on a server ie
the W drive.
Depending on which Ou the user resides in the server location is different
for each.
We have 6 OUs and each ou has the name ES,WS, SMG, LC, GV, GC and also the
security groups that we have are the same as the OU names.

When a user is part of any OU their group memberships are:
Domain users and the group that is the same name as the OU (ES,WS, SMG, LC,
GV, GC).

The folder redirection is based upon group membership thus when a user has
to be moved to another OU we change their group membership to the new group
and then we change their location for their home folder to point to the right
server. The security for the folder are copied as well.

I did not setup this network my boss did now he has past it on to me to look
over… WOW!!

Now when the user logs on at her new computer at her new location her my
documents are pointing to the local computer’s my docs path. I have to edit
the registry on her local machine to change the path to point to the right
one..

Can some \one explain to me why is this happening. I have done a lot of
experiments but still stuck…

I can be reached at (e-mail address removed) or (e-mail address removed) as well

all help/advice is welcomed...

I solved it for the respective OU the security group did not reside in that
OU thus in order for folder redirection to update itself when a user is moved
from one Ou to another I do all steps and mentioned before and then move the
security group to that respective OU..

The tasked was logged successfull in event viewer for folder redirection...

Hi,

Folder Redirection is a bit of a pain and not always the most
reliable. The best idea is to get it working and then just leave it.
It seems a little funny to have a user move their home directory just
because they move OU’s.

Basically What I have done.

1> I mapped the users home directory in AD eg. H:
\servershare%username%

2> In the Profile, I manually edited the registry to point the
Personal (My Documents) To H: (Not to the UNC Path) Therefore IF
Folder Redirection doesn’t work that day, at least the Users Profile
is tatooed.

3> I also enable Folder Redirection via group. However, I don’t move
the user out of the group once he or she is in it. Also Make sure the
Group Policy that does Folder Redirection is in a OU above where the
user resides not the Group as it has no affect on the group.

4> Make sure DNS is working properly. This is the number one cause of
problems with Group Policy and Folder Redirection

we have the home dir mapped to the W drive but i too understand what you said
but i was not the one who setup the AD environment... it was like this when i
was hired....

my boss setup folder redirection at the domain level GPO ie ... the default
domain policy... It should have been done via the OU level and if updates
don't occur right away you can always remote regedit via a vb script or dos
console to edit the proper paths which is clear OR "gpupdate.exe /Force /Boot"

there are many options that i have presented to him but he is just making
excuses...

what can i do he signs my paycheck ....

But i am thankfull for your prompt help and advice....

Have a good one...
Tony..
