my cursor starts up in the header in Word

For some reason when I open a new word document, my cursor starts up in, or
above the header. The only way I can get it to move to where I want it is to
open the header and close it again. At that point the insertion point goes
to where it should be.
It's driving me nuts but nothing I seem to do (including produce a new
default page) seems to stop it. Any help or advice would be gratefuly
received

In Word, click on Tools | Options | View | check the "White space
between pages" box | OK.
