I click on "My Computer" and it takes 2 minutes until the contents (drives)
appear.

The flashlight swings back and forth, the entire time.

Windows XP with SP 2.

Help!

Try a System Restore. Go to Start>All Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>System Restore. Try going back to a time
before this problem started.

How large is your harddrive and how many partitions? i.e. do you have
a C, D, E, F, etc. drives? Not removable drives or do you have any drives
connected to your USB ports. The flashlight means it is searching for
your system info, the more peripherals the more time it is going to take.
Do not leave your printer ON or any other devices, except for monitor,
keyboard and mouse. BTW, are you using a wireless mouse and/or keyboard?

I can't do a system restore because the problem started a long time ago.

I've got a laptop with a 60 GB HD, with 40 GB free at this time. Only have
C and D (CD) drives. Only one partition.

I have a wifi, but no wireless mouse or keyboard. I'm not connected to a
printer, but can use it via my (almost always off) network to my desktop PC.
