I have shut off the auto restart function but I never get blue screen.
runnning memtest86 cd the computer restarts after a while. Does the memtest
boot cd use any hard disk functions? When I try to reinstall windows xp the
computer restarts during the process. If I try to run norton anti virus
scan the computer restarts after a while. The computer does this even in
safe mode. I tried another video card and tested the power supply voltages
all ok. I have not tried new memory as memtest86 did not show any errors
before it restarts. Also sometimes it doesn't fully restart so I have to
force a power down to start up again. This has me puzzled.

If this is the case, there is a severe hardware issue most likely.

When the power supply fails, this may happen during one millisecond.
No way to detect this failure when using a simple plus/minus device
(voltmeter).

When there was a restart, the test was probably not completed. Also,
using software for memory testing is not 100% reliable. Don't waste any
more time and/or money. Carry the computer to a repair shop.

How many years your computer is old ?

Because the temperature of the Celeron or Pentium is very hight when X
SP2 is runing, it may occur that it suddenly shut down.

Once or twice a year, clean the processor radiator : may be thi
trouble will disapear...

Hi Steve & Linda Miata,
Is this a desktop or laptop computer? If it is a desktop, does have a
graphics card and/or sound card or does it use onboard chips?

Check the CPU fan, maybe should change a new fan for it.

I tried: new fan, new power supply, new memory, removed all usb devices and
pci cards, tried another video card. Still random restarts.

The solution was the heat sink. It was not well atteched to the athlon
processor. I bought a new copper heat sink and thermal grease reinstalled
and everything is fine. Thanks for all the suggestions.
