Its weird...You know that you're main hdd is supposed to be C: right? Right.
Well in my case it isn't, instead its H: instead of C:. And now, I give you
the story: I've been using the hdd that came with my computer,a normal 40gb
hdd. I got my computer back in about June I think, so its not all that old. I
modded it and such, new video card, another hdd. A couple days ago the hdd
that came with my computer went bad and died.SO I took that one out and put
the second one I had in it as a Master, (reason 1, being that the hdd would
have to do until I get a new one and 2: I got a S.M.A.R.T.message from my
bios everytime I booted up) no problem right? Wrong, for the longest time I
kept getting the "SMART" message from my bios then I reseted the bios and
that worked. I got the hdd reformatted and stuff.Everything is working good
EXCEPT the fact that the hdd's root directory is "H:" instead of "C:"...Now I
need it to be C: in order to download and install my drivers...Anyone help me?
??

No guarantees in this but, You will have to reformat the drive since you
cannot rename the system volume. You should disconnect the other drives
before you do, however. You should be able to download the drivers anyways.
Just redirect them to your H drive.
Wait a while, someone may have a better suggestion.

Not a better suggestion but an additional one. Disconnect all extra drives
except the cdrom drive when installing the new one. What happened was there
were other storage devices connected that "grabbed" C: before it could go
to the new hard drive.

Also... When I replaced a drive with a new Maxtor, I used the utility that
came with the drive to transfer an existing Windows that was on C:. I
checked the Maxtor website first and the tools on my CD were the same that
they had available for downloading so I just used the CD. In the first
stage, that drive was L:. I was a little concerned but continued to follow
the on screen steps shown by the Data Lifeguard tools. When I finished
following those directions, the tools re-lettered the drive to C:

Not everyone has had good luck with these drive utilities or those provided
by other manufacturers but it worked for me.

The only way to change it back is to C: (at least) is to do a repair
install, if you change your windows working drive letter you will find
windows nolonger works.
