hi,

I have installed Exchange 2003 on a dc 2003. I can send the e.mail to all
but I do not receive any e.mail from internet. I can send and receive e.mail
within domain users. I have created Exchange MX entry in my DNS. I have
configured internet mail wized I have already created MX records in my DNS
which is also being used to host me web site. For domain sites it is
pointing to the right web sites. I am not sure what and how any thing else
to be changed. Would you please let me know if there is detail reference
regarding creation of Exchange records in DNS. I understand that the problem
is looks in DNS. May I know what is wrong wit DNS..Any ref. or tip. Sorry
for asking vey basic question?

If you are using MS DNS then just right click on the
zone and "create new mail exchanger" (MX record)

If you are using some other DNS then just grep
for an MX record example in some other zone...

domain.com. IN MX 15 mailserver2.maildomain.com.

(Trailing dot's are important if you put domain names on the end of server
names, e.g,

@ IN MX 15 mailserver2

(Means: Current name, mailserver2.currentzone.com.)

The MX record is needed in the public zone, Leave the "Host or Domain" field
blank.
You will also need a reverse lookup on your public IP for the mail server's
name. Chances are you will have to get your ISP to create the reverse lookup
for you, most ISP's do not delegate reverse lookups to your server because
they still own the IP address, but they will create the PTR for you.

Thanks for the reply but in fact I did it in right way as you mentioned. but

Well, what do you get when you query it with nslookup?

nslookup -q=MX ThatMXName.com That.Srv.IP.Addr

Thanks it say can not find unkown host etc.
Thanks again
I think what the problem is, you must leave the "Host or Domain" field blank
on the MX record then it's name will appear as

(same as parent folder) IN MX 15 mailserver2.maildomain.com.

Not as listed below.
domain.com. IN MX 15 mailserver2.maildomain.com.

Maybe if we can see a copy of the zone file itself to confirm the propert
configuration for him?

If you will give us the domain name we check it out for you. Maybe you have

Abdul,
Thanks for posting your domain name that will clear this up.
You have a couple of problems here, you main problem is yes you do have an
MX record, you have the mail server name as dns1.eitlink.com there is no "A"
record for it so it does not resolve.
In your eitlink.com zone create a new host named dns1 point it to
24.57.16.132 that should fix that part.

Next problem is you don't have a reverse lookup on that IP with your mail
server host name.
Non-authoritative answer:
132.16.57.24.in-addr.arpa name = d57-16-132.home.cgocable.net
That is going to give you trouble you need to talk to your ISP to get that
changed.

The next problem you don't have NS records in your zone for both of your
name servers.
Also, you should probably create host records in your zone for you name
server host and IP you should also create this host in your zone dns2 with
IP 24.57.16.130.
Look at this it will give you all this information

Cable providers FROWN on services running ontheir line. Matter of fact,
Comcast put their whole residential subscriber IP range into the mail RBL
lists. So I tell folks who have cable lines and run mail servers to NOT be
surprised if it doesn't send mail to everyone, especially AOL, they block
anyone in the RBL list, beside many companies do not receive mail from any
mail server that doesn;t have a Reverse entry in DNS, such as cable and ADSL
and DSL providers.

Besides Abdul's problems with no mail host record for the MX record, he's on
a cable line, with no reverse entry, and I don't think his provider will
create one or delegate the revers zone to him, and more than likely in the
RBL list.

Unfortunately, I would suggest for Abdul to go with an SDSL line if he wants
to provide mail services to ensure that mail gets properly delivered to
anyone out on the Internet.

Abdul, as Kevin suggested, you need to create a host record for the mail
server, maybe call it "mail" or something,or just keep the dns1 name, but
the MX record needs to point to it.

Create new, MX, leave the host name blank, but in the bottom field, point it
to dns1.eitlink.com.

Good luck to Abdul.

Thanks for the reply. I already have te A record and reverse look
zone. But still not sure. It looks problem with ISP.
Thanks

Your MX record is gone now and you have private addresses in the public zone
for hosts that also have public names. That won't work.
set type=all
eitlink.com
Server: d57-16-132.home.cgocable.net
Address: 24.57.16.132

eitlink.com internet address = 24.57.16.132
eitlink.com internet address = 10.0.0.10
eitlink.com nameserver = dns1.eitlink.com
eitlink.com
primary name server = dns1.eitlink.com
responsible mail addr = hostmaster.eitlink.com
serial = 312
refresh = 900 (15 mins)
retry = 600 (10 mins)
expire = 86400 (1 day)
default TTL = 3600 (1 hour)
dns1.eitlink.com internet address = 24.57.16.132
dns1.eitlink.com internet address = 10.0.0.10

Yeah, that will never work. Expect problems with that!
