Pardon typo in subject, this update should be correctly dated July 8th.

I've been clicking on some of the links in Randy's post, thinking that maybe
the time had come for me to consider using the MVPS hosts file instead of
the one that Spybot offers. But... truly, I find the information offered
simply overwhelming. It seems so horrendously complicated to download this
thing, with all the checksum details and so on. I have no idea at all how to
do any of that. It's like reading a foreign language - I don't even know
what questions to ask.

By contrast, the Spybot hosts file requires a single click of a button to
install or remove. While I'm aware that it's almost certainly less effective
than the MVPS version, it has the huge advantage that I can understand how
to use it. Is there any way that the MVPS hosts file could be presented more
simply so that ordinary people like myself could use it?

Think I mentioned this previously, but the freeware HostsMan (Hosts
Manager) makes handling large and multiple custom hosts files and updates
thereto pretty easy. Thanks to your post, I see there have been upgrades
to it that I've not spotted before, as of June, 2007, it's up to release
3.0.45. I'm downloading that now and I'll comment on it after I get a
chance to work with the new version.

Hi Alan

Have you considered using Hostsman which will automate the hosts file update
process for you?. There are a number of host update sources available from
within the application but I tend to choose only the MVPS one. It is a great
little prog which is now at ver 3.0.45 and its FREE ! With the option to
donate if you wish.

Here`s the link if you are interested:

Due respect, Dave - the author of the MVPS HOSTS does *not* recommend
merging HOSTS files, please see:

Thanks very much Dave and Stu. This may solve my problem!
I'll investigate further and let you know how I get on.

Hi Randy;

Although I don't currently use anything other than MVPS hosts myself, I
just got through reading the following recent post from the
abelhadigital.com HostsMan forum Administrator:

"There's no problem in using both MVPS and hpHosts, unless you notice that
too many legitimate websites that you want to visit are being blocked."

http://forum.abelhadigital.com/index.php?showtopic=165

Any ideas reference the above thread? I filed this away mentally as
something I might want to consider in the future until I saw your post, so
now I'm confused, and would appreciate any thoughts. Has the multi-hosts
consolidation recommendation changed from what was recommended?

Hi, Dave - I've taken the liberty of forwarding your query to the author of
the
MVPS HOSTS file, for his comments and feedback.
As soon as I've heared back, I shall post whatever comments to this thread.

Regards,
Randy
