I am trying to get a song from a CD onto my presentation. I am able to
sucessfully place the sound onto the show, but it will not play no matter
what I do. What is it that I am doing wrong?

Awesome! Thanks. Now, I also have a somewhat similar problem with a song
that I had gotten from the internet. If it is not doing what I said before, I
am getting a thing that says that Powerpiont cannot support something or
other.

Grrr... I am sorry, but I am looking to embed the song into the
presentation. PLEASE tell me that this can be done. I tried to convert the
song into a wav file and so forth, but it just does not seem to be working.
PLEASE, PLEASE help!!!!!

Where are you having trouble: converting the song to WAV or embedding the
WAV file into the presentation? Note that only WAV files can be embedded.
All other sound types are linked.

I am going to go on the safe side and say converting the file. I thought
that I was converting correctly because I never got a thing saying that what
I wanted to do was not available. What is happening is I am taking the song
from the CD using Windows Media Player, taking the song and saving it in a
file as a wav, then using the insert options to put the song into the
presentation. However, after I do that, I get the icon to play the song but
the song never plays.

I believe that PFCMedia also works with sound files. That might be your
best option for getting the sound file to work.

You might also want to go to your Start menu and choose Run. Then type
mplay32.exe

Now try to open the sound file from there. If it plays there, it should
play in PowerPoint. If it doesn't play there, it shouldn't play in
PowerPoint.

Windows Media Player will add digital rights management to songs ripped from
CD. And DRM files won't play in PPT.

So I'd suggest you find another audio ripper. Audacity might be a good
choice. It's free. You can Google for it.

Ah yes. I forgot about DRM. I'll have to investigate that some more for
the book chapter I am writing about copyright in schools. DRM doesn't
play nicely with the fair use portions of copyright law.

I've ripped MP3s from the new WMP 10 and no DRM is added to that.

I don't think it adds DRM, but it preserves DRM. That is, if you are
using an older CD with no DRM, WMP will create happy MP3s, but if you are
using a newer CD that includes DRM, WMP will create anti-social MP3s.

Ah, maybe that's the deal with it, then. I thought there was also some kind
of setting you had to turn off or on or something somewhere in the bowels of
WMP. <g>

But I'll happily confess I don't really know because I don't use WMP to rip
sound files!

Correct David,

WMP doesn't add anything to it. (Unless you tell it too.) There are
several "levels" of DRM on newer CDs and WMP simply passes them along into
the ripped file. What can or can not be done with it after that point
depends upon how the content creator set DRM in the original file.

In most cases you can rip to your machine for private use, but you can not
use it in a distribution application like BitTorrent or PowerPoint.

Wow... First of all I want to say that it seems like you people have a
great sense of humor... That is a very good thing, because now I am so
confused that I am thinking of becoming Amish--that way I do not have to deal
with this headache any more. I tried the executable file that was
recommended, and the file did not play there. I also tried to attempt that
Audacity thing that you guys were talking about, and that seems too
complicated for now (the presentation is now due this Monday, and I have no
time whatsoever to learn a new program). I am completely at a loss, and the
convorsation that you guys had just blew me away. So, therefore, I believe
my question is this: "What???"

A

Austin Myers

Tell you what, drop me an email (just click reply) and I'll see if I can't
help your sort it out. Oh yeah, the humor. I had a funny bone transplant a
few years back and now I can't help myself...

First of all, I just want to say that I really appriciate you doing this.
THANK YOU!!! As far as the humor goes, I think that it is great that you
have it and you are going to need it for what I am about to put you through.
Here is what is going on. I actually have two problems, but they are
baisically the same problem. One is with a song from a CD and the other is
with a song that I got from the net and "saved target as". The both of them
are saved as wav files, and they play fine in Windows Media Player. The both
of them are saved under the My music folder. When I go to insert the songs
in to the presentations, I go to Insert, Sounds from file, and then I select
the sound of my choice. The speaker icon for the music comes up normally,
but when I go and click on it so that I can play the sound, it does not play
at all. This is not the first time that I am putting outside music into a
powerpoint presentation, but it is the first time that I am having this
problem. What in Sam Hill am I doing wrong??? Once again, THANK
YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
