Multiple Outlook.exe processes

Hi!

Whenever I close Outlook 2003 it leaves Outlook.exe running in the
background. It will do this each time I open/close the program, creating
multiple instances, the only workaround is to end the processes manually in
Task Manager. (extremely tedious!)

I've tried running scanpst.exe to check for folder corruption - it comes
back clean - and I've tried to repair my Office installation, but the
multiple process irritation still remains. Does anyone know how to fix
this?

Some common reasons why Outlook will not shut down completely when you click
either the X or Exit:

1. PDA synchronization software with your PDA in the cradle.
2. WinFax Pro (especially 10.02 in Outlook 2003) - contact their support
for an alleged fix.
3. Franklin-Cover Plan Plus!
4. COM Add-ins.
5. Mail reminder add-ins that keep a stub of Outlook open in the background
to check for new mail and fire reminders.
6. Anti-virus/firewall programs that are set to scan incoming and outgoing
mail.

I'll answer my own problem

I found that if Outlook is set to open with "Outlook Today" showing, and is
closed without changing to any other folder, Outlook.exe stays running in
the background.

This problem dates back to Outlook 2000 and Win 2K,
sometimes multiple instances of Outlook's system tray
icon (little envelope) that indicates a new message has
been received. Double clicking other iterations of the
envelope icon creates a Windows error message "Operation
Failed". Also, the icons don't disappear when all mail
messages have been read.

Under Task Manager>Processes that there are multiple
instances of Outlook.exe running---one for each of the
several icons that appear.

To my knowledge, after searching for this answer since it
started occurring 3 yrs ago, it has not been addressed by
Microsoft. Due to their lack of response to this issue,
though it has been raised every year, I assume it is not
a high priority.
