multiple OS's exist, only want one. how do I slick and relaod anew

I had XP home running on my sony vaio, and it crashed, so i loaded xp pro.
Now i have multiple os's at boot up. i only want one! tried format c:/u/c
and it tells me "format cannot run because volume is in use by another
process. will run if dismounted. would like to dismount?" i say yes, and it
says no, "cannot lock the drive. the volumeis still in use. (bad computer.)
How do i "slick and reload" and not have multiple OS's at startup?

restart with XP CD in Place
pick new installation
XP will let you format drive during installation
It will not let you format it out of exitance while it is running
watch for it!!
