Multiple IP addresses.

Hi

I was going through the various offers given by a Cable Internet Provider.
It said that it would be providing 3 IP addresses.

Can any one let me know what can be the use of having 3 IP addresses? Can I
improve my performance/speed of my internet connection using these 3 IPs?

Pointers to any kind of info related to the use of such IPs addresses would
be appreciable.

Regards,

What they are telling you is that they will provide you with 3 public IP
addresses. That means you could get 3 different computers on at one time
without the need for an additional NAT router. You will not get better
performance by trying to assign multiple IP's to one machine, your speed
will still be limited by the cable providers upload/download speed limits
which are limits on the line itself not on traffic from a single IP.

There are no relationship between how many IP addresses and Intent accesses speed. For example my company have over 30 IP addresses using T1 line. The reasons we need them are using for multiple webs, VPN, TS/RDC or other dedicated connections.

Hi

It might help in case you want to totally isolate one computer from the
others.

An independent IP connection might be an advantage when running a Web
Server. However, Entry Level Internet accounts are not allowing running a
web server to begin with.

In most cases, these three IPs end up as a kind of a "trap" for consumers.

Using three external IPs deems your three computers not the be on one simple
cohesive Internal LAN (and you might forget about decent Wireless capacity).
I saw many cases of users that had few IPs by default, they had hard time
(psychologically) to let go and use one IP with a Router, at the end reality
forces them to do so.

Unless they are offering you a routed block of contiguous IP addresses, (
which they won't be ), then you are much better off avoiding that.

You will end up with 3 machines with randomly-assigned IP addresses, which
will all get Internet access, but you will be unable to network locally
between the machines very well. This is a so-called 'edgeless network',
and it's a nightmare from both a usability/configuration and a security
point of view.

In the vast majority of regular domestic installations, you will be MUCH
better with a single IP address and a NAT router. That even includes if
you want to run servers etc internally. In which case, you need to set up
something called Port Forwarding on the router.
