multiple IEXPLORE.EXE in task manager?!? HELP!!!

Hi everyone... I'm not very computer literate so I'll apologize in advance
for using (what are probably) un-technical terms :)

My parents bought a new computer in April. It has worked fine, although
veryyyy slow, since they've had it, with the exception of Internet Explorer.
The actual program works just fine, but when you close the window of the
internet it stays running in the task manager, and thus uses "Mem Usage".
This happens every time that the internet is opened and then closed. I don't
think that it's due to a virus, since it has been happening since we first
got the computer. Sometimes when I go into task manager (I stumbled across
this one day when trying to figure out why the NEW computer was running so
slowly...) there will be as many as 15 IEXPLORE.EXE running and using many
thousands of Mem Usage. I've determined that this is why the computer was
running slowly. When I go through and end the processes, it seems to go back
to running smoothly.

Any ideas as to why the IEXPLORE.EXE stays in the task manager after it has
been closed?? OR any ideas on how to fix it (I guess that I don't care as
much about why it's happening, but more about how to fix it)

THANK YOU so much in advance!

Your computer is infected with viruses and/or malware. Here are general
malware removal steps, including preparation and finishing. Go through them
separately including scanning with either Sysclean or Multi_AV and Ewido.

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a professional computer repair
shop (not your local version of BigStoreUSA).
