Multiple IE6 frustrations

Doug Main

W98, PII machine. (I'm trying to build a basic e-mail, browsing, word
processing machine for someone out of an older collection of parts)

I have (after numerous back and forths) W98 with all the critical updates in
place. However, IE6 (installed over IE4 that came with the OS) is
stumbling.

In Help|About it's version 6.0.2800.1106 with SP1, and Q88923,837009, 833989
and 313829 installed. I have 824150 and 831167 standing by for
installation, but I get a dialog that says the program requires SP1 to be
installed first.

I also find the "...encountered a problem...must close" pop up just about
everytime I click on something, with various causes shown in the tech
information including mshtml.dll, urlmon.dll, ole32.dll. I also get the
white box Close/Ignore error message re: ddhelp.

I've got Firefox installed to use for downloading files and patches, but
it's gonna be guesswork about what to download. Of course, I can't get to
the windowsupdate site w/o IE and I can't use IE w/o getting to the update
site.

Any takers on how I can get this machine to function?

Many thnks

Write your 25 digit serial key number on paper.
If all fails, bootup up with a floppy or CD after you copy
C:\Windows\Options to C:\Options
Rename C:\Windows to C:\OldWin
Reinstall from C:\Options and reboot and complete all the windowsupdates
This is very quick compared to your problems if you are not an expert.

What does Windows Update say the machine needs, Doug? It's usually
preferable to rely on Windows Update for patches a machine should have
instead of picking & choosing ones you think it needs.

The *only* IE6 Critical Update the machine needs now is MS04-040
(http://support.microsoft.com/kb/889293). MS04-040 is a cumulative update
(includes the fixes in all previous ones).
