Multiple Identities - Give us the choice.

Can I install Outlook Express on Vista so my wife and I can access our email
without having to have separate user accounts????

Now I vent:

Hey Microsoft - Why can't I decide for myself if I want multiple identities
in my email set up?!? Stop holding my hand. You can default it to do this for
those that aren't advanced but for those of us who can handle it give us the
option!

Give us the choice. I don't want to create a whole separate user account
just to have access to my email. Thats ridiculous. My wife and I don't have a
security issue with each other that we need to protect our email from each
other. Is some one does then they always had the option of creating a new
user account and keeping their email separate.

This is one of those situations where if it ain't broke don't fix it. This
is ridiculous that I have to set up a separate account and have to switch
users just to check my email and then switch back to use the rest of the
computer.

Outlook Express can not be installed under Vista. But, you and
your wife can use Windows Mail under the same Windows user.
Simply add both mail accounts, then use message rules to keep
incoming mail separated.
Go to Tools, Message Rules, Mail, New...
and the wizard will guide you through the creation of a new message
rule. You should wind up with two rules looking something like this:

1. Where the message is from the 'Guy' account
move it to the 'His' folder
and stop processing more rules.

2. Where the message is from the 'Girl' account
move it to the 'Hers' folder
and stop processing more rules.

Note: Substitute your existing account names for what I've called
the 'Guy' and 'Girl' accounts above.
The new folders can be named anything you want, and they can
be created as part of the rule creation process.

Download the Windows Live Mail beta.
The program has less problems than Windows Mail.
Windows Live Mail has separate Inbox, Drafts, Sent Items, Junk e-mail,
Deleted Items for each account.
New message have the From for the account you are currently viewing. (The
From line doesn't need changing to send from a different account.)

Thanks Ron.

I have a couple of questions about the beta version:

1. In the beta version do you switch users like you do in OE or are they all
shown but in a folder/explorer type style? Does that question make sense? In
other words, if my wife is in her email, does she see mine too?

2. Do you control what email is downloaded when? So if my wife opens windows
mail does it download all my email too or just hers? I guess this is sorta of
related to question 1.

and

3. When you reply to email does it get replied to from the email account it
was sent to? So if I reply to an email to me does it get sent from my account
and not hers?

I guess if the answer to number 1 is that you switch users like on OE that
answers the other 2. Though we don't need to secure out email from each
other, we wouldn't want our email going into the same interface, we would
like to have to switch back and forth like in OE.

Thanks, Gary. But I would like to be able to switch identities just not have
to switch users. Guess we have just lost that functionality. That's too bad.

I like to have my email saved on my harddrive so I can back it up, but I
guess I'll just have to use webmail from now on until someone out there
creates a better email program for Vista. I don't get why MS would take away
this functionality.

From what I gather here its very polarized to the extremes. Either you have
to switch users completley to access different email accounts or you have to
set up both of your emails to come into the same program and then just have
them sorted into folders that are accessible by anyone. So you either get
extreme security or absolutly none at all. Its time to try another program I
guess.

After looking around a bit, I think I am going to give Thunderbird a shot.
It allows multiple users and says its works on Vista. Can't hurt to try it i
guess. Though I have always liked the idea of sticking with MS stuff to
maintain a consistency with the OS. But this new mail program just doesn't
work for me at all.

Sorry MS. I have been using OE for as long as I can remember. But we need to
have multiple identities for our email without having to set up multiple user
accounts. If I am working on the PC and my wife wants to jump on real quick
and check her email she should be able to do that without having to switch
users on the computer. Hopefully MS will one day give us back that option.

There is a folder list on the left.
The list can be reduced to just icons.
The > means the folders can be reduced to just the folder name.
Search folders
Unread e-mail
Unread from contacts
Unread feeds
Account 1
Inbox
Drafts
Sent Items
Junk e-mail
Deleted Items
(user created folders)
Account 2
Inbox
Drafts
Sent Items
Junk e-mail
Deleted Items
(user created folders)

Outbox

Storage folders
(imported folders)

All accounts are downloaded when the mail is checked.

All replies use the account to which it was sent.

Look at this program.

That is awesome! Thanks! I will check it out. Do you know if anyone has used
it and what their experience with it was? I would really rather find
something like this that works than switch to a non-MS mail client.

The author said in another email that several people were using the program.
Judging by the other work that Steve Cochran has done with OE, I highly
recommend the program.

If you try Thunderbird, give us a report back on how well it works
for you. I hear that Version 2.0 makes it cumbersome to switch
between identities.
