Multiple Font Color buttons possible?

I use Word to create legal documents and I color new and deleted text
differently. Newly-added text is blue & double underlined and deleted text
is red & stricken. I have added the double underline and strike buttons to
my toolbar to save time but would like to have a button for coloring my text
red and another for coloring my text blue. I am able to get two font color
buttons on the toolbar, but when I change the color of one button, it changes
the color of the other. How can I get one to stay red and one to stay blue?
Is this even possible?

Simpler would be to define a pair of character styles (eg 'new' and
'deleted'), and associate those with toolbar buttons. But why are you
re-inventing the wheel like this? -- why not just switch on track changes
have Word style your new and deleted text automatically?

I'll try the character styles. It may get a little tricky though because the
documents already use certain styles and I don't want to mess anything up.

I guess I should have given a little more info. The legal documents I work
on are leases for tenants in shopping centers. Our attorneys create these
"template" leases and we "adjust" them based on the negotiations made with
the tenant. As a company rule, we cannot use track changes (I don't know why
- I just started there a month ago so I'm just "goin' with the flow.").

So I'll give the character styles a try and let you know how that works. In
the meantime, if anyone else has any suggestions, I'd appreciate any help I
can get.

Thanks!! :)

I tried to use newly-created styles but because the documents already use
certain styles (like paragraph indentation and outline formats), the text not
only changes color and underline style (like I want it to) but also changes
to a "normal" style (like I don't want it to). Is it possible to have the
desired text change color and underline but retain it's original styling?

I read another post about macros but am not familiar with that. Would that
be helpful in attaining my desired effect?

You want to make sure that your character style is based on Default
Paragraph Font. Then it will apply on the color and any other formatting you
select. Have a look at the Hyperlink style as an example.

I think you've missed the distinction between paragraph styles and character
styles. If you look in the style list you'll see there are a few (eg
hyperlink) whose symbol is an underlined 'a' instead of the more common
paragraph mark. Create a new style and have a look at the 'Style type'
field.

Jezebel, you're right. I changed it to character style and it works
perfectly!! Thank you so much to everyone who posted here.
