Multiple cell selections

When I open an existing MS Excel file or open a new one,
my mouse automatically selects a range of cells when moved
over the spreadsheet. I can't turn off the automatic
selection and can not enter cell data.

Hope some one out there can help me "turn off" this
functionality.

if this happens for all Excel file and has happened since the beginning
you'll may upgrade your mouse driver
