Multifunction Epson Stylus CX5200

Hi Folks

I've had help from people on here before so now it's my turn(!) ....

A few days ago I posted a message saying I was having trouble with my
CX5200. It is on my new 'Vista Home Premium' Pc and is being shared by my
older 'XP' Pc (using a router network). Some facilities didn't work at all,
the printing process was dead slow (especially when printing from the 'XP'
Pc), I couldn't see the ink levels etc.

I'm glad to say that, after spending many hours investigating, contacting
Epson and generally twiddling with various settings, things are better (by
about 50%). BUT I'm sure that will be the limit of any improvements and,
fairly soon, I'm sure I'll find myself getting a new replacement printer.
Anyway ....

Basically, Epson are not going to issue new drivers and so that's it - in
fairness, though, I must say that one of their Tech guys was as helpful as
he could be. He emailed me some instructions which were useful and involved
getting a download from the Microsoft site (yeh, not the Epson site). I
think the download in fact comprises new drivers but they only half do the
job. Still, I guess something's better than nothing!

If anyone would like to make use of a copy of the info given to me by Epson,
just reply on here and I'll post it on one of my websites for all to see.

Cheers
John

I would be VERY interested in seeing that information, because just today I
had an Epson Stylus DX4450 delivered, and I'm having serious driver issues. I
got the print functions working fine, but the scanner driver just will NOT
install.

Actually, that's not correct: the driver's installed just fine. Vista just
refuses to use it, even when I go through the (daily, and very, very, very
annoying) process I go through with every USB device sooner or later of
having to point the system to the C:\Windows folder. But with Epson's scanner
driver I get this error:

Windows found driver software for your device but encountered and error
while attempting to install it.

The system cannot find the file specified.

I'm going to call them tomorrow, because I do NOT want to be stuck with
another piece of equipment I can't use with Vista (like my previous scanner
that I'd just bought but the OEM chose not to update for the new OS).

Vista's pretty, but this USB driver business is driving me mad.

This solution has worked for some people with problematic USB devices:

Locate the file INFCACHE.1 in C:\Windows\inf

Right click on the INFCACHE.1 file, select Properties >Security > Edit, and give
your account full control.

Delete INFCACHE.1, or rename it to INFCACHE.1.BAK or temporarily move to your
desktop.

Thanks for the suggestion, but it didn't work. (Vista did take the
opportunity to re-, re-, re-, re-, re-install the driver for my laser
printer, though, giving me yet another "Copy 1" of it).

*sigh*

I am getting a distinct beta-tester feeling about this OS I paid £120 for.

Just deleting a printer from Control Panel > Printers does not necessarily
totally remove it.

In Control Panel > Printers > Menu (ALT if not visible) > File > Run as
Administrator > Server Properties > Drivers tab > you can remove the printer
totally there.

After removing the Epson software in Control Panel > Programs and Features, you
might want to try to reinstall the software again making sure to leave the
printer's USB cable disconnected from the computer until prompted to connect it.

Thanks for the suggestions, fellas. In the end, though, nothing worked. I
called Epson, and reached a dead-end with the call centre person there, so I
lugged the printer across town and returned it. I figured that brand-new
"Vista-compatible" hardware with install CDs should not be this much of a
hassle.

In case it might be helpful to anyone else, I'll include here the e-mail I
got from the Epson "e-chat" service. It may actually contain the solution,
but their response was essentially "contact Microsoft and ask them for the
drivers", which is about as helpful as telling me "Call a phone booth
somewhere in Europe".

Please direct me to where I can see the solution to the problem regarding the Epson Scanner. Windows Vista cannot find a file necessary to load the scanner driver, but does not identify which file it is looking for. It merely reports: "The system cannot fine the file specified."

Your help will be appreciated.
