msncon.dll

Windows XP SP2
Outlook 2002
I am receiving the following message when opening Outlook:
"Cannot open your default e-mail folders. An unexpected error has occurred.
MAPI was unable to load the information service msncon.dll. Be sure the
service is correctly installed and configured."

The only thing I could find that match this error was to install MSN
Connector. this did not help. Any advice?

TIA
Cindy

Do you have an MSN account defined?

Brian,

thank you for your quick response. When you say a MSN account defined, do
you mean an MSN email as my default email in Outlook? I have no account set
up. I usually use it for the calendar mostly. I was going to set my email,
but now i am getting the message and it then asks me to open in Safe Mode.
then it just hangs.

Yes, I mean an account referencing MSN, whether or not it's your default
account. msncon.dll is part of the MSN Outlook Connector. If you don't
have that installed, then close Outlook, delete the (hidden) file
%UserProfile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook\extend.dat,
and try restarting Outlook.

Brian,

I deleted the file but I am still having problems. When I open Outlook it
wants to open in safe mode and run detect and repair. If I click yes I get
a dialog box that pops up saying that it is migrating my account(?) and then
it will stop responding. I have tried to let it go to see if it will start
responding but after hours I gave up. Anything else?

TIA

I'd start with a new mail profile, then.
